The shoe is a plastic box which sits on the table holding the portion of the deck remaining to be dealt. The shoe makes it more difficult for a dealer to cheat by dealing a card other than the bottom card. If your cards were dealt face up, then the dealer, upon seeing your second bet, will split your cards for you. Many casinos allow you to split any pair combinations. You may "double down" on a hand which consists of two cards. With "double down" you double your original wager. When you double down, you are dealt only one additional card to your hand.
